Mobiles have been a essential part of our life. We depend on our mobiles for connectivity with the world, e-mail, etc. But these small wonders have a major problem – they need to be charged after a certain interval of time. To overcome this problem many technologies are being invented and one of the latest in this race is “Charging the Mobile Phone using the nearby sound waves”.
This is a new and unique concept for producing energy to power small multi-media devices. Tahir Cagin, a professor in the Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University developed this technology and his team have found that a certain type of piezoelectric material can covert energy at a 100 percent increase when manufactured at a very small size – in this case, around 21 nanometers in thickness. Amazingly if this size is altered by decreasing or increasing the thickness the efficiency decreases.
This technology is just a new born baby and will take some years to get converted into the end-market products. But once it gets in existence there will be endless possibilities of charging your phone with almost any sound.
The technology is very robust but still sound wave powered cell phones seems like a dream as continuously production of energy which should be sufficient to power a phone is too far. And totally depending on such phones does not makes a good sense. Imagine one making useless sounds just to charge a phone.
Not only phones but this technology will also help in powering low power devices such as laptops, MP3 Players, and many other devices which don’t require much power to keep themselves alive.
But this technology can be a good add-on in future devices and can be used as an alternative to their main power sources and it could be helpful when you are not in reach of main energy sources.
